Dance studios offer both private and group teaching. What are the pros and cons of of private dance classes? Are private dance lessons worth their higher cost?

Whether it's Ballroom, Latin, Salsa, Swing or Argentine Tango, those looking to learn how to dance, or to improve their dancing, generally have a choice of group dance lessons or private dance lessons.

Disadvantages and Benefits of Private Dance Lessons

Private lessons offer individual training and coaching for either singles or couples. The benefits of private dance lessons include

  • One-on-one attention from the instructor
  • Greater opportunity for answers to questions, concerns, issues
  • Fast-track learning because of direct assistance
  • Greater development of precision in lead/follow skills
  • Allowing the instructor to fine-tune technique (such as posture and frame)
  • Greater attention to nuance and styling
  • Time spent together as a couple (a good choice for wedding dance classes)

Private dance lessons have some disadvantages as well

  • They are relatively costly compared to group dance lessons
  • An expensive way to learn the basics
  • Difficult to practice floorcraft because of the absence of other dancers
  • Although still fun, they lack the social atmosphere of a group

Pros and Cons of Group Lessons

A group dance class is often the first dance lesson experience for a couple just learning to dance. Group lessons offer a number of benefits, the chief of which are their relatively low cost and their social atmosphere.

On the other hand, there are some disadvantages to group dance lessons. Instructor attention is spread over a larger group, so individual dancers may not get as much help as they need. Also, shy individuals may find higher stress and challenge in a group situation.

Semi-Private or Small-Group Dance Classes

Some dance studios offer small-group or semi-private lessons. These are frequently limited to a specific number of couples or dancers (two to five couples). Semi-private lessons share the advantages and disadvantages of both private dance lessons and group dance lessons.

  • More individual attention
  • Allow faster learning
  • Tend to focus on one specific dance or level
  • Often used to develop a performance or presentation dance

Combination Dance Lessons: Group, Private, and Semi-Private

Because group and private dance lessons each offer significant benefits, many dance studios and dance instructors offer a combination program that might include some large group lessons, some small group lessons, and some individual lessons.

The dance program will be developed to suit the needs of the individual or couple in terms of how fast they learn, what specific training they need, what dances they want to learn, the level of dancing they want to receive, all balanced against their available time and budget.

Another way to get the best of both worlds – to experience the benefits of dancing with multiple partners and a fun group atmosphere while still receiving individual instruction – is to take private lessons but also to attend studio practice evenings and dance parties.
